Can you imagine a judge telling a person who is considering committing a crime that they can be set free from the punishment the crime deserves? What power would the law have? Why would anyone obey?

Is God a judge like this in Deuteronomy 29–30? He tells Israel that they will be cursed, forsaken, and their names blotted out from under heaven if they reject him, but then God turns and promises to restore and gather back his repentant children compassionately. Did God destroy Israels motivation to obey?

This story is a shocking example of God demonstrating that he wants a personal relationship with his people. He motivates them with his pure and undeserved love. The law is powerless to change hearts. Only the gospel, which is the good news of Gods undeserved love, can create a lasting, faithful relationship with him.
What does it mean to be at one with God? What does atonement mean?
Jesus came as the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world (John 1:29). He is Gods sacrifice of atonement. (Romans 3:25). His blood covers all sin (1 John 1:7). On the cross, Jesus, as our substitute, faced Gods wrath for sin and took the punishment we deserved. God has reconciled the world to himself in Christ (2 Corinthians 5:19). Jesus atonement, paid once for all (Hebrews 9:12), doesnt make deliverance from sin possible; it makes it complete. This gift, received through faith (John 3:16), means you are now at one with God.

In the book of Numbers, when I read about the complaining of the Israelites as they wander in the wilderness, pride keeps me from In Deuteronomy 6, God commanded the Israelites to love him with ALL of their hearts. But when I think about what it means to love God with ALL of my heart, I feel afraid. This demand of the law would be a lot easier for me to handle if it said SOME of my heart. Or perhaps I would feel better if it commanded me to love God MORE and MORE each day.
But it says ALL. Now. Not just part and not just eventually.

But then I remember that, through my baptism, I am connected to Jesus. Jesus was the one who could and did love ALL of the time. He fulfilled the demands of this law perfectly. Now I am covered in his righteousness. Because of Jesus, my selfishness has been washed away. God sees my heart just as if it had always loved as perfectly as Jesus did.

Moses sin in Numbers 21 and how God dealt with it confuses me. Although Moses was a prophet and did much good, God didnt give him a pass for striking the rock. God didnt say his good outweighed his bad. As a result, Moses suffered significant consequences for his sinful disobedience.

However, when I think about it, this holds true not just in Gods courtroom but also in courtrooms worldwide. When a good and upstanding citizen breaks the law, a judge doesnt give them a free pass. They still get speeding tickets, DUIs, and felony convictions. They still receive sentences. The good they do doesnt cancel or outweigh the bad.

Although it might be hard for us to reconcile, regardless of who a person is, even a prophet like Moses, or what he has done, miraculous signs and wonders, sin still requires punishment. Even small sins committed towards the end of a productive and impressive life count. None of it matters.

This problem with ALL sins, which are all committed against God, and all people who do sins, great and small, is why we need a Savior from sin; this is why we need Jesus.

Our good doesnt outweigh the bad and never will. Therefore, we need Jesus to step into our place in Gods courtroom and declare, This is another one for whom I lived perfectly, this is another one for whom I bled and died, this is another one for whom I was raised to life.
