Baptism works forgiveness of sins, rescues from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation to all who believe this, as the words and promises of God declare.
We, humans, run after and seek the pleasures and treasures of this world, which eventually only led to heartache and hell.
God in love has made me his through baptism, and the faith that he has given me makes me his child. I don’t have to fear sin or death any longer. I am an heir of eternal life, and that changes everything about how I live and how I will die.
How wonderful it is that we can be called children of God (1 John 3:1-3)! How marvelous it is that God sent Jesus to die for us and rise again so that we who were dead in our sins might be made alive in Christ and be adopted as sons (Romans 5:6-11, 8:12-21, Titus 3:4-7). We were dead in our sins and could do nothing for ourselves.
It is in him we live, move, and have our being (Acts 17:28).
It is also in him that our lives are redeemed, bought back from the penalties of sin, brought into fellowship with God (Galatians 4:7, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20, 1 Peter 18-19).
What on earth could be more precious than this gift of love, this sacrifice from God?
Our eternal treasure is this washing of our sins away in the blood of the Lamb in our baptism (Gal. 3:26, Matt. 6:21, Mar. 16:16, 1 Peter 3:21).

Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.

By faith, believers have spiritually already passed with Christ down into the tunnel of his death and out through his resurrection on the other side, into fellowship with the Living God. If we have spiritually died and been raised with Christ by grace through faith, we can be sure that we will join him in that journey physically in due time.
And this is the reality and hope that baptism signifies. It declares the reality (in God’s sight, which is the only sight that matters) that our old self–the “us” who deserved and received damnation in Christ–DIED with Jesus. Those who were BURIED with him and were RAISED with him look forward to the sure hope of our physical resurrection by his power in the age to come.
God uses baptism as just one more way of declaring his intentions to us.
